The main responsibilities of the Investigation Department (ID) of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) include;
1) Investigation of complaints lodged by individuals, organizations and on Commission’s own behalf if there is a reason to believe that a probable violation of human rights have occurred in accordance to Human Rights Commission’s Act (Act No 6/2006).
2) Investigation of complaints lodged under Anti-Torture Act (2013) to prevent acts of torture, punishment, inhuman or degrading treatment for detainees and people under state care.
3) Management of a Rapid Response Team to assess individuals who passes away while detained or under a state care institution. This include body check before burial and to gather relevant information through document review and information given by family and relatives.
4) Maintenance of a Complaints Mechanism system, observation of trends, emerging issues and maintenance of statistics based on cases lodged at the Commission
5) Monitor protests to check for use of force by institutions and to ensure that due process is followed by relevant personnel.
7) Management of the Commission’s Toll free number 1424, on a daily basis from 8:00 am to 12:00 am.
