Human Rights Club

What is the Human Rights Club?

Human Rights Clubs were introduced in the schools of the Maldives by the Human Rights Commission, UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, with the aim of familiarizing students with human rights, encouraging them to actively work towards the promotion of human rights, and fostering a culture of respect for human rights in the community. The Human Rights Clubs are established and managed by the respective schools themselves.

What kinds of activities will the Human Rights Clubs conduct?

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has published the Human Rights Club Manual detailing activities that the clubs can conduct suitable for different age groups. Additionally, the Commission, with the assistance of UNICEF, has published a 'Young Human Rights Defenders Handbook'. These two books will provide guidance on how to run the clubs and impart fundamental information about human rights to students in an age-appropriate manner.

What kind of activities will the Human Rights Club conduct?

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has published a book detailing activities that clubs can conduct for different age groups. In addition, the Young Human Rights Defenders Handbook was also published by the Commission with the assistance of UNICEF. Both of these 2 books will explain how to run the club and how to communicate the basics of human rights and information to students in an age-appropriate manner.

Human Rights Club Awards

The 'Best Human Rights Club Award' and the 'Young Human Rights Defenders Award' are awarded by Human Rights Commission each academic year to recognize the most active Human Rights Club in raising awareness about human rights among students and the general public, as well as to honor the work of students involved in the Human Rights Clubs. The purpose of these awards is to familiarize school students with human rights and nurture future human rights defenders among the students.
