The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), with support from MIFCO, Naifaru Council, and Hinnavaru Council, conducted a series of human rights awareness activities in Feydhoo, Hinnavaru, and Naifaru from January 25–30.
From January 26–28, nine sessions were held at the MIFCO site in Felivaru to raise awareness among employees about human rights and workplace sexual harassment. Several of these sessions were specifically designed for expatriate workers.
Following this, additional awareness activities took place in Hinnavaru on January 28 and in Naifaru on January 29. Participants included government agencies, civil society organizations, healthcare workers, and members of the general public. Sessions covered human rights, anti-torture measures, and children’s rights.
The Commission also engaged with schools, meeting teachers, senior staff, and students in grades 8–10 to discuss the operation of Human Rights Clubs. Focus group discussions on civic participation were held with youth and various NGOs, while separate sessions targeted parents, government employees, and community members.
Raising awareness of human rights among Maldivian citizens and residents is a key responsibility of HRCM under Article 20(M) of the Human Rights Commission Act. These activities form part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote respect for human rights in collaboration with local stakeholders.
