The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) conducted the first round of this year’s Human Rights Defenders Training Program in GA. Villingili from April 20–24. The five-day program, designed for human rights advocates, aimed to build a network of defenders who work together to raise public awareness, hold the state accountable, and promote human rights.
A total of 29 participants took part in the training. Alongside the program, HRCM conducted awareness sessions in GA. Nilandhoo, GA. Dhevvadoo, GA. Mamendhoo, GA. Villingili, and GA. Dhaandhoo. These sessions targeted government staff, state-owned company employees, and local communities, focusing on human rights and the Whistleblower Protection Act.
According to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Human Rights Defenders are individuals who peacefully work to protect and promote civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, and advocate for those whose rights have been violated.
This year’s training is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the British Government. Previous rounds of the Human Rights Defenders Training Program were held in Kulhudhuffushi City (2021), Fuvahmulah City (2023), and Malé (2024).
