The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) participated in a working session on 1 February 2026 organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Government of Sweden, focusing on the Right to a Healthy Environment (R2HE) monitoring tool. The session was facilitated by Mr. Sean O’Connell, UNDP’s Environment and Human Rights Global Technical Specialist and one of the key drafters of the tool.
The working session provided an opportunity to discuss the application of the R2HE monitoring tool and its potential integration into HRCM’s planned research and reporting initiatives, as part of ongoing efforts to advance environmental and climate justice in the Maldives.
Earlier, HRCM also held a meeting with UNDP to explore avenues for collaboration under UNDP’s project “Advancing Environmental and Climate Justice in the Maldives”, including engagement on human rights–based approaches to environmental and climate-related issues.
The engagement highlighted opportunities for HRCM to strengthen future collaboration with UNDP, while also enhancing its own capacity to independently undertake research, monitoring, and reporting on the right to a healthy environment.
