Observed annually on July 11th, World Population Day is an occasion to shed light on issues facing the global population, as well as their nexus with sustainable development, equality, and human rights. The purpose of commemorating this day is to raise awareness about the importance of guaranteeing rights and freedoms for every individual with respect and dignity, without any discrimination. The theme for World Population Day 2026,
"Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future,"
emphasizes the importance of fully unlocking the potential of young people, increasing youth participation in society, and establishing an enabling environment that paves the way for a sustainable future.
Education and good health are essential for youth to achieve their goals and develop their skills. The right to education is highlighted under Article 36 of the Constitution and Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Furthermore, under Article 23 of the Constitution, access to quality healthcare services is a right guaranteed to every Maldivian citizen. While quality education equips young people with knowledge, skills, and self-confidence, access to healthcare services and the support necessary for physical and mental well-being enable them to participate fully in society. Investing in education, health, and well-being lays the foundation for a brighter future. By eliminating the barriers faced by young people and ensuring they receive the support they need, societies can help them build healthy and prosperous lives.
Every young person must be afforded equal opportunities, regardless of their gender, disability, background, or circumstances. The principles of equality and non-discrimination are affirmed in Articles 1, 2, and 7 of the Constitution, as well as Article 17 of the UDHR. Promoting equality and inclusion ensures that all youth have access to opportunities and paves the way for harnessing their ideas and talents. Increasing youth participation is vital to building an inclusive society. Creating a safe environment where young people can express their sentiments and make their voices heard provides them with an invaluable opportunity to shape their own future. To build a secure future for youth, there is a need for decent work, skill development opportunities, and economic prospects. Facilitating employment pathways and supporting entrepreneurship not only drives economic progress but also paves the way for youth to realize their aspirations. Furthermore, young people play a vital role in building a sustainable future. Increasing youth engagement in environmental protection, innovation, and social initiatives is a crucial step toward addressing the challenges faced by present and future generations.
On the occasion of World Population Day 2026, this Commission underscores the importance of fostering opportunities for youth to learn, grow, and participate in society. By safeguarding the rights of young people, addressing the challenges they face, and assisting them in fulfilling their potential, an inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future can be built.
