The President
of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Mariyam Muna, and the
Vice President, Moomina Waheed, represented the Commission at the 33rd session
of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) Review, held
at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. During a private briefing with the
Committee, the HRCM President delivered a statement on the Maldives review,
outlining progress made in implementing the Convention on the Rights of Persons
with Disabilities. The statement also emphasized the Commission’s ongoing
efforts to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities,
including its role in monitoring compliance and advocating for inclusive
policies that uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals.
As part of the
same mission, HRCM renewed its Memorandum of Understanding with the Association
for the Prevention of Torture (APT) at the organization’s headquarters in
Geneva. The President and Vice President reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment
to preventing torture, strengthening human rights protection, and enhancing
cooperation with international partners. The renewed MoU underscores the
Commission’s role as the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) of the Maldives,
reinforcing its mandate to carry out independent monitoring of places of
detention and to work closely with APT in advancing global best practices in
the prevention of torture and ill-treatment.
Through its
participation at the CRPD Review and the renewal of its MoU with APT, HRCM
continues to strengthen its engagement with international human rights
mechanisms, demonstrating its dedication to upholding international obligations
and advancing the protection and promotion of human rights in the Maldives.
