Human Rights Commission of the Maldives strongly condemns the violent attacks on journalists on the night of February 22, 2013, and urge the relevant authorities to hasten due process in bringing the perpetrators to justice

The brutal attack on Ibrahim Waheed Deputy CEO of Raajje TV and the attacks on Aishath Liza and Aminath Shanee, journalists of TVM and the attacks some nights back on VTV journalists are all in direct violation of freedom of the press as afforded under the Constitution of the Maldives and the International Conventions that the Maldives is party to and HRCM sees these as attacks against the independence and freedom of the Press.

It is essential to create an enabling environment for journalists to work without intimidation and calls on all authorities, the government, all political parties and citizens to work collaboratively in order to ensure freedom of the press.
