Human Rights Commission of the Maldives

Press Release PR - 015/2012

No one should be discriminated against on the basis of their political ideology. And no one should harass, threaten and commit acts of cruelty against anyone. It has come to our notice that in exercising various constitutional rights, especially at rallies and protests, there are situations where specific groups of people are targeted and persons and properties are harmed, and there have been calls for violence and fear. We request everyone to refrain from all such acts, and to work together towards the peace and stability of the society.

Considering that there are many citizens who do not belong to any political party or take part in any political activity; we call on all those who organize political activities to respect their rights and to refrain from troubling them when holding rallies and protests. Given that the right to respect for a person’s home, respect for the rights of children and elderly are guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, we request that no one should carry out any such acts of threats, cruelty and vandalism, whether it is personal or political.

The Commission appeals everyone to refrain from any act of violence against security officials and from obstructing their legal duties, and we condemn all such acts. We call upon relevant authorities to take legal action against those who carry out such acts.
