Human Rights Commission Southern Regional Office is the first regional office of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, situated in Addu City.

Establishment

SRO was established as per the decision of the Human Rights Commission to establish regional offices in two regions of the Maldives to expand the work and reach of the Commission and to work close with communities. His Excellency former Vice President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, officially inaugurated SRO on December 21, 2019.

Responsibilities

The south region of the country consisting of Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Fuvahmulah City and Addu City comes under SRO’s mendate. The main responsibilities of SRO appertain to areas in HRCM strategic plan and is as follows.

  • Investigating complaints alleging Human Rights violations in the region and investigating cases, which come to notice, where HRCM considers a Human Rights violation is taking or have taken place.
    - Cases can be lodged at SRO through either the complaint form, telephone, toll free number, in writing or through e-mail.
  • Conducting advocacy and education sessions targeted to different groups in the community to spread Human Rights awareness in the region and to develop a culture of respecting, protecting and promoting Human Rights.
  • Conducting research and surveys on Human Rights related fields in the region.
  • Monitoring Human Rights situations in region.
  • Review and comment on the regulations and policies implemented by government institutions in the region.
  • Giving information about the work of SRO to the public through media.
  • General office administration.
