Human Rights Commission of the Maldives

HRCM NGO Network

In 2009 the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) established an NGO Network to support and assist human rights NGOs and to secure the cooperation of NGOs. The number of NGO in this network was 48 at the time of establishment.

The primary objectives of establishing the NGO Network includes:

1. To collaborate with these NGO in protection and promotion of human rights, since NGOs will be more aware of the troubles of the people and able to witness the human rights situation of the people from a close proximity.

2. To enlist the help of NGOs for HRCM’s works, while increasing the public sharing of human rights information, and working towards protecting and promoting human rights.

3. To work with the NGOs in protection, sustenance and promotion of human rights; since the NGO’s play an important role in holding the government accountable.

A conference with the members of this network to resolve on a procedural guideline is planned for 7th and 8th of August 2010. This meeting will decide ways in which HRCM can assist the member of the NGO Network in their work, how they can aid HRCM’s works and also ways in which the member NGOs can collaborate with each other.
